Abstract

Background: Nowadays, increase in the number of old individuals is one of the important health issues, attracting much attention from scientists in various fields. The present study aimed to examine the use of inpatient and outpatient services among elderly patients in Namazi hospital affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in 2013.
Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 260 individuals over 60 years old hospitalized in Namazi hospital, Shiraz from December 2012 to January 2013. The participants were selected through random stratified sampling. The data related to utilization of inpatient services were collected from the subjects’ medical records and were recoded in a reliable and valid checklist. Then, the data were entered into the SPSS statistical software, version 20 and were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, Man-Whitney, and independent t-test.
Results: The participants’ mean length of hospital stay was 7.87 days. In addition, 75% and 64.2% of the participants had used laboratory and radiology services, respectively. The results showed a significant relationship between length of hospital stay and marital status (p=0.032). Besides, the deceased individuals had a significantly longer stay in hospital compared to the others (p=0.022).
Conclusion: Considering the patients’ utilization of laboratory and radiology services and their mean length of hospital stay, special attention should be paid to geriatric wards and diseases as well as to diagnostic and therapeutic services, including laboratory and radiology, to prevent patients’ long hospital stay.
